10 Ways to Relax After a Long Day

10 Ways to Relax After a Long Day

Work. Projects. Deadlines. Doesn’t the thought of it all completely stress you out? There are so many reasons to be stressed out. For instance, most of us have to juggle school, work and a social life—all while trying to maintain a good nights’ worth of sleep. And that’s sorta asking for a lot.

Lately, I’ve been worrying about wedding planning which requires heavy researching and coordinating with multiple vendors. On top of that, we’re in crunch time at work, trying to meet our biggest deadlines. Naturally, I get so burned out from a long day of staring at the computer that I have no energy left for my personal endeavors!

To keep my sanity, I have found 10 easy ways to relax after a long day. These tips can work for everyone, regardless of whether you’re still in school or out working the corporate life. In the end, these tips have guided me into a happier and less stressed person.

After a long day, I like to…

Change into comfortable clothes

After work, I immediately change into my “home clothes” (aka pajamas) because they are 10x more comfortable than my work clothes. It’s as easy as that!

Unplug from technology

As a millennial, this is the hardest step. Technology is something that engulfs every aspect of my life. Since my job requires using the computer for every step of the way, I realize that it’s especially important for me to unplug from technology and relax without my computer at home.

Do breathing exercises

When was the last time you took a step back and thought about nothing but breathing? This one is probably the easiest, but most overlooked method of relaxation.

Read a book

Nothing pulls me out of my own life better than reading about someone else’s life, even if they’re fictional. A good book can distract you from anything and everything!

Work out

Half an hour each day is all you need. There are plenty of solo options that don’t require recruiting a team of players together, such as jogging, yoga, pilates, Zumba or dancing. If you’re not looking to sweat buckets, then a simple walk around the neighborhood will work wonders.

Listen to music

Listening to music is an instant mood booster. I should add that singing along can be therapeutic as well, even if you consider yourself tone-deaf or think you sound like a screeching cat (which I doubt you do). Sing your heart out like no one is listening!

Find something to laugh about

Usually Dan is my source of laughter, but when he’s stressed from work as well, then I will resort to finding something online. I know, I just told you to unplug everything, but realistically, you will probably sign onto your laptop sometime during the night! If you’re online to watch funny, lighthearted Youtube videos of cats playing patty-cake or dogs making unlikely friends with ducklings, then I’ll permit it.

Take a bubble bath

Warm, running water. Soaking in a tub full of bubbles. Do I need to explain more?

Drink wine

To be honest, I’ve given up alcohol a while ago. But you can’t ignore that drinking wine in moderation is a popular way for people (of age) to unwind. Isn’t the saying, “a little wine can go a long way”?

Take a nap

Crawling into your warm, comfy bed after a long day has got to be one of the best feelings. Bonus points if you have a furry little creature, like your cat or dog waiting for cuddles on the bed.

How do you like to relax after a long day?

This is a nice list on ways to relax! I need to do a better job with unplugging from technology. I’m already grinding away 8 hours a day on the computer at work and I should probably avoid additional computer time at home @__@. Aha, taking a bubble bath while drinking wine can be combined for that 2-in-1 experience XD.

Taking a nap is my favorite way to relax! The only thing is that I end up being wide awake at night. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Nancy! The internet takes up so much of my day too, so I totally get you! And I love the idea of drinking wine while relaxing in a bubble bath 🙂

If I nap during the day, it has to be short, like 10 minutes, or I can’t sleep at night either!

Thanks for reading, Violette! Hope the tips work for you.

I like to unwind after a long day by reading a book, listening to music, or working out. I’m always scared to take a nap during the day because I don’t get to sleep easily. But that doesn’t stop me from accidentally taking one lol

Sometimes my naps aren’t voluntary either, haha!

  5. April 29, 2017 / 6:54 am

These are all such good tips, and so welcome too, especially since today is going to be a homework filled day. I can already tell I’m going to feel exhausted by the end of it, can’t wait to put these tips into action!
Unplugging from technology is definitely going to be the hardest for me to do, but I will try my best to relax completely and distance myself from my phone and laptop haha!
Apart from all of these, I’d say that another thing I like to do in order to relax is doodling, but I don’t do it as often as I used to, due to a lack of time 🙁

    • May 2, 2017 / 9:40 am

What a great idea! I can’t believe I forgot all about doodling! My teachers used to know exactly which assignments were mine, because they’d be covered in doodles, haha! Good luck with all your homework!

Great list! I love coming home and laying out my yoga mat to do a few stretches and work out the kinks from sitting at a desk all day. Then a nice shower and I feel so much more relaxed =o)

  7. April 30, 2017 / 2:38 am

I could do all of those things except one, which is to unplug myself from all technology. I just can’t. I literally fall asleep while on Instagram. Ha! It’s something I need to work on.

    • May 2, 2017 / 9:42 am

      Same here! It’s every millennial’s problem D:

  8. April 30, 2017 / 4:01 am

I agree with all the suggestions you made. For me, the best way to destress is to work out, read a book, listen to music or watch a funny TV show like The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Always works for me. Nice tips. xx

Such a great list. I do most of these things. My new-ish fav way to relax though is using an ice roller on my face. Less than $12 on amazon, & life changing level of relaxing. I do it right before bed & I fall asleep way faster than I used to!

  18. May 24, 2017 / 1:19 pm

Great tips for relaxing! I usually change into comfy clothes and curl up with a book for the evening. I have to start to get better at giving myself more time at the end of the day away from technology. And I definitely have to start adding breathing exercises into my night routine! My moms always telling me to do some, but for some reason I haven’t listened.

    • June 5, 2017 / 1:56 pm

It’s definitely challenging for me to put my phone away before bed too, so you’re not alone!

  19. May 28, 2017 / 11:01 pm

These tips are on point! Pajamas are my favorite clothing! Haha. I wish I can wear it all day everyday! LOL

    • June 5, 2017 / 1:52 pm

Same here! I love wearing my pajamas, hehe.
