first second time kayaking ever was in the Great Salt Pond on Block Island a few years ago. This past July, we decided to revisit this popular destination for more kayaking!
Kayaking at the Great Salt Pond was incredibly peaceful because the northern edge (marked green on Google Maps) lies along a wildlife refuge. We drifted next to the undeveloped land, watching shorebirds like egrets and plovers feed their young.
Meanwhile, there is a ton of boat traffic towards the mouth of the pond and southern half by New Harbor, so we don’t kayak there. Sea for yourself on Google Satellite. Every white dot in the water is someone’s boat!
There are two companies you can rent from on Block Island called Sandy Point Co. and Pond and Beyond. Although, we borrowed our kayak from Dan’s Aunt, so we haven’t had experience with either companies.
Since Dan and I refuse to paddle in separate kayaks, we swear by tandem kayaks! The separation anxiety is real between us… But here’s a hint for all you couples hoping to kayak together someday. The stronger and more experienced kayaker sits in the back and steers, whereas the front kayaker gets to set the pace!
Unfortunately, I suck at kayaking, enough to mess up our coordination, so Dan insisted that I take a break aka leave him alone to do all the work. That’s when I took the camera out for selfies! People watching from afar must hate us millennials, but sorry not sorry! I am having a great time!
In love with lighthouses? Check out the Southeast Lighthouse on Block Island.
The day might look a little dreary but don’t let my photos fool you! The weather was pretty humid and the water was as warm as bath water. Luckily, the pond wasn’t deep where we paddled, so we jumped out by the shallow edge to collect some shells in hopes of using them as part of my wedding decor!
Adding this shell to my collection.
My bathing suit is from Aerie’s cute swim collection. I am wearing the Super Scoop One Piece Swim Suit in Maroon Lagoon — on sale now! There is some serious side boob going on, so I wouldn’t wear this suit with family or conservative friends. Actually, I would hardly suggest wearing this kayaking either — my mistake! Otherwise, this swim suit is super fun and sexy for one-on-one vacations with your significant other!
