Kayaking on Block Island

Great Salt Pond, Block Island

My first second time kayaking ever was in the Great Salt Pond on Block Island a few years ago. This past July, we decided to revisit this popular destination for more kayaking!

Kayaking at the Great Salt Pond on Block Island

Kayaking at the Great Salt Pond was incredibly peaceful because the northern edge (marked green on Google Maps) lies along a wildlife refuge. We drifted next to the undeveloped land, watching shorebirds like egrets and plovers feed their young.

Meanwhile, there is a ton of boat traffic towards the mouth of the pond and southern half by New Harbor, so we don’t kayak there. Sea for yourself on Google Satellite. Every white dot in the water is someone’s boat!

There are two companies you can rent from on Block Island called Sandy Point Co. and Pond and Beyond. Although, we borrowed our kayak from Dan’s Aunt, so we haven’t had experience with either companies.

Since Dan and I refuse to paddle in separate kayaks, we swear by tandem kayaks! The separation anxiety is real between us… But here’s a hint for all you couples hoping to kayak together someday. The stronger and more experienced kayaker sits in the back and steers, whereas the front kayaker gets to set the pace!

Kim and Dan Kayaking at the Great Salt Pond on Block Island

Unfortunately, I suck at kayaking, enough to mess up our coordination, so Dan insisted that I take a break aka leave him alone to do all the work. That’s when I took the camera out for selfies! People watching from afar must hate us millennials, but sorry not sorry! I am having a great time!

The day might look a little dreary but don’t let my photos fool you! The weather was pretty humid and the water was as warm as bath water. Luckily, the pond wasn’t deep where we paddled, so we jumped out by the shallow edge to collect some shells in hopes of using them as part of my wedding decor!

My bathing suit is from Aerie’s cute swim collection. I am wearing the Super Scoop One Piece Swim Suit in Maroon Lagoon — on sale now! There is some serious side boob going on, so I wouldn’t wear this suit with family or conservative friends. Actually, I would hardly suggest wearing this kayaking either — my mistake! Otherwise, this swim suit is super fun and sexy for one-on-one vacations with your significant other!

I love your suit, Kim! It has a very Baywatch feel to it! I totally get you with separation anxiety… Chris and I pretty much have that too xD

Kayaking is a fun activity, especially for couples! Not sure if I ever told you but Chris and I tried kayaking once… he did all the work hahaha. And you’re definitely right with the stronger person staying the back.

P.s. Who cares what they think, take them selfies!! 😂

It’s so cute you two take the same kayak and paddle together! I also adore your one piece bathing suit, you look amazing! I’m always afraid of flipping in a kayak since it’s so much easier than canoeing but it’s a lot of fun to take them out! I’m glad you had a wonderful time xx

Love these photos. Kayaking is my fourth fav thing in the world after hanging out with animals, eating cake, & hiking, haha. I haven’t been in a while. I need to go asap before it’s too cold!

Kayaking must be the ultimate relationship test! Or at least somewhere right behind IKEA visits :):)
I love the color of your swimsuit. Been looking for a swimsuit myself as I want to take up swimming at the gym, but not in a bikini.

Glad to hear you having fun with kayaking! The view looks so peaceful. I’m sorry to hear about you feeling a bit sick during the ride. At least Dan is a sweetheart and was willing to paddle! His aunt sounds like a sweetheart for lending you her kayak! I know I would love to share one with my boyfriend because I can’t swim… haha….

Your bathing suit is super cute!!

These photos are absolutely gorgeous, it looks like you both had a brilliant time. I think it’s so important that couples do things like this together, I think if I date someone soon I’d want to have the sort of relationship you two have – it seems so beautiful and perfect, and a lot better than most people have ahaha. I wish you two the best of luck with it all 🙂

This is a cool thing to try! I have never tried kayaking in my life ever because i am afraid of flipping the boat (if that’s what you call to it).

I love nature and your pics (as usual)

  34. September 5, 2017 / 9:52 am

Cool experience and nice pictures!! My husband is always trying to get me to do some kayaking but si far he haven’t been successful at it!! haha!

  35. September 5, 2017 / 9:57 am

I think kayaking is definitely tougher than it looks- good thing you had Dan to come to your paddling rescue! 🙂 Super cute suit, babe.

  36. September 5, 2017 / 1:38 pm

Kim, I love that swimsuit! I’m pretty partial to one pieces lately. Kayaking is a lot of fun (were your arms sore afterwards, though?) What a lovely, peaceful getaway. Getting a lot of calm vacation vibes from your pictures.

  37. September 6, 2017 / 12:54 am

I suck at kayaking too! Glad you had Dan who let you take breaks. 😛

  38. September 6, 2017 / 11:38 am

This looks like so much fun! I haven’t actually been kayaking before however it does look like fun! My hubby is keen to kayak one day 🙂

Going kayaking looks super fun, I hope to do that someday! I actually had the same bathing suit in black from Aerie but had to return it because it showed too much haha!

  40. September 12, 2017 / 7:49 pm

Looking like a total Baywatch babe! Kayaking is fun until you don’t want to row anymore and you can tell your partner to take over haha.

    xx Yasmin
