7 Tricks to Remind Yourself to Drink Water

Being an adult means you have to remember to drink water. Am I right or am I right?

Even though I have been #adulting for several years now, I still forget to drink water. First world problem or not, it’s still a problem. And it’s a huge problem. Often times, when I get dehydrated, my body punishes me with headaches and terrible migraines. Now that it is officially summer, I have decided to treat my body better by drinking more water. As always, I encourage you to do the same!

Here are some tips and tricks that I have used to remind myself to drink water:

Start the morning off right.

Before bed, I leave a full glass of water on my nightstand, so it will be ready for me to drink first thing in the morning. That way, even before I step out of bed, I will have some water in my system.

Drink from a larger glass.

This trick is for the lazy people out there. Ahem, me. When I’m working in the office, sometimes I am so busy with my assignments, that I don’t have time to get up for a refill. Or I don’t feel like it. Or I forget. But by having a larger glass of water sitting by me, I don’t have to get up as frequently for refills.

Love what you drink out of.

Invest in the cutest, yet most functional water bottle you can find, so you’ll enjoy carrying it around! My favorite water bottle is blue with a motivational design on the front, which says, “Good Vibes Only” and time stamps on the back that encourage me to drink each hour.

Try sparkling water or flavored water.

Fruit-infused water and even sparkling fizzy water tastes yummier and best of all, still counts as hydration!

Set an alarm.

If you’re extremely forgetful or simply too busy to think about hydration, then have your phone do the mental work for you. Set an alarm at intervals throughout the day to remind yourself to take a sip.

Use an app.

Months ago, I’ve stumbled upon Plant Nanny, a health & fitness app that reminds you to drink water. Basically, every time you “water” your adorably cute virtual plant, you have to take a sip of water yourself. If you go several hours without drinking water, then your virtual plant will start to wilt and die. You wouldn’t want that to happen, right? So drink up! By turning this “chore” into a game, you’re more likely to be competitive and want to drink water.

Eat foods that contain water.

Water isn’t limited to a glass. You can hydrate by eating foods with a high water content. For instance, the best and easiest choices are watermelon, pineapple, and cantaloupe, which are all in-season during the summer.

    Another trick is just adding a straw to your cup. Since we kind of mindlessly drink through a straw. Before you know it you’ll need a refill. Your skin will look even more amazing though :)!

    I use an app to “check in” whenever I drink water. It’s very important and keeps your body hydrated. I have a water jug on my desk so I don’t need to always stand up and refill my water XD. Reading this post reminded me that I have some sparkling water in the fridge XD. That definitely helps too as long as it’s very low on sugar. Thanks for sharing some of your water tips!

    I’m so bad at drinking water, I can go days without drinking water. I used to use an app and it actually worked for me but I changed phones and I just haven’t been able to download it.

    These are great tips! I prefer flavoured water to plain water and will easily drink litres of flavoured whereas I struggle more when it’s just plain water. Loving what you drink out of is so true too – I’m a total geek and have just bought a bottle with the periodic table on it!

    These tips are great, Kim! I absolutely love drinking water (as lame as that may sound!) and drinking out of a water bottle I love (especially using that one when I go to the gym or when I’m at work) makes me drink so much more because I love it so much! Ha!

    I agree in drinking from a large glass/container. In my case, I drink from a 16oz YETI tumbler, so when I empty it, that’s 2 glasses of water down. Makes for easier tracking, too!

    I’ve never had a problem remembering to drink water. I dislike soda, and water is my normal drink of choice. If not water, lemonade. I prefer cold drinks vs hot or warm drinks, so I’m a bit picky on my water temperature. >.<

    Luckily I don’t have a problem at all drinking water. I live in Phoenix so it’s absolutely essential that I drink! Or else I just feel so dehydrated. I am always amazed at how many people don’t regularly drink water though.

    Nice tips. Great to get in the habit of it! I once went an entire year drinking ONLY water with the exception of ONE glass of lemonade on my birthday. I’m not that strict anymore, but I’m still about 90% water. I love it, taste amazing to me!

    I use to always drink sodas until I started living on my own. I saw that everyone on campus had a water bottle so I went and got my own and it was the best idea ever! It made me drink more and more water and now I barely drink soda!

    Yes yes yes! Hydrating is so important! I know so many people who just drink like two glasses of coke a day like what are you doing??? I drink so much water, and I think that’s why I don’t get spots or anything.

    Ooh great tips, I like the one about drinking water when you wake up, I try to do this every day. I also use a todo list that has a dailies list that has drink at least one bottle of water a day on it! I also found that getting my swell water bottle helped a lot too, since now I always get cold water to drink!

    What has helped me is buying a Hydroflask and I use Mio enhancers to make it more delicious. I know it’s better to drink straight water, but it really helps!

      I just bought a Hydroflask for Dan for our Block Island trip! Unfortunately, he lost it on the ferry ride there. Maybe it wasn’t meant to be haha, but we’ll probably just buy another one… Haven’t heard of Mio enhancers but I definitely want to try that out! Maybe they have extra nutrients or something?

    These tips are great! I bought myself a large glass a few months ago and I’ve definitely been drinking more water because of it. Also I love the sound of that app. It sounds like the perfect motivation to drink throughout the day, plus the idea of a cute plant to take care of is an extra bonus! And I always forget that food also has water in it, so I’ll be keeping that in mind from now on!

    Excellent tips! I’m so bad at remembering to drink water, but when I’m in Dubai, it’s really important as the summer heat would make you dehydrated in a second. I’ve started preparing a big bottle each morning with infused water and try to remind myself to drink all of it during the day.
